I can not take the glory for writing this. This was the work of some friends at Ambassadors Alliance Fellowship.
Atheist Penn Gillette: "How much do you have to hate someone to not tell them about hell ?"
7. Inviting nonbelievers to church or youth group:
--You invite them to church! Great! However, there is no guarantee they will actually hear the gospel message once they arrive. Getting them there will not accomplish much if no one actually speaks to them about their salvation and, unless your pastor is guaranteed to share the whole gospel every Sunday, they may not hear it. I'm not discouraging the invitation of nonbelievers to church. I'm just saying this practice should not be considered evangelism.
6. Acting Christian-like to show them that you are a Christian:
--I have heard so many phrases like "preach the gospel at all times, if necessary, use words" (St. Francis of Assisi), or "Actions speak louder than words," or "Live the way Christ did." What do your actions say? Does it say that "Jesus came to the world to die for your sins and that you can receive the gift of salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ?" I highly doubt your actions could articulate the gospel message that succinctly. Besides...as a Christian, shouldn't you already be acting like a Christian?
5. "Servant Evangelism" (The Christian community defines this as just plain helping others)
--Service, assisting others in their way of life...without sharing the gospel, which is similar to number 6. Also similar to the Social gospel that started in the 19th century (are they the same?). If evangelism could be considered service, what then would make it different from social work done for any other reason?
4. "Friendship Evangelism" aka so called "Relationship Evangelism"
--In quotations, because I know some people actually do share the gospel to friends without waiting too long, but the majority of the Christian community fits this title into these two categories: 1. Start of making friends, then (just when the time is just right) share the gospel. 2. Just be a friend to them (be nice, Christian-like, different to the worldly ways), and (hopefully) they would raise the questions. My response to category 1: You better hope that person does not die before your "perfect time," or else you might need to question yourself on how "friendly" you really are. My response to category 2: Read number 6 on the list.
3. Praying for the person without sharing anything
--"We Christians too often substitute prayer for playing the game. Prayer is good; but when used as a substitute for obedience, it is nothing but a blatant hypocrisy, a despicable Pharisaism... To your knees, man! And to your Bible! Decide at once! Don't hedge! Time flies! Cease your insults to God, quit consulting flesh and blood. Stop your lame, lying, and cowardly excuses. Enlist!" C. T. Studd.
2. Being Seeker-Sensitive
--Why, apart from purely pragmatic reasons, are some churches doing church FOR nonbelievers? Church is a place of worship, fellowship, and learning about God for BELIEVERS. Do they fail to understand, nonbelievers don't seek after God (Romans 3:11)? And when you say sensitive, do you mean by not offending them? God's Word is already an offense. In fact, Jesus already warned that people will hate you because they hated him first. (Matthew 10:22)
1. Doing NOTHING
--Only 2% of American Christians regularly share their faith, and even less here in Kiwi land. I hope you are not relying on the TV preachers or your pastor to reach the lost.
Evangelism is the communication of the gospel. It is the spreading of the good news. How do we spread it, mainly through the spoken word and distribution of gospel tracts?
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" (Romans 10:14)
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," (Matthew 28:19)
The devil wants you to sit down and shut up, but Jesus wants you to get your tracts, open your mouth and share the gospel.
